Examinations for Dry Eyes: Visit Our Red Deer Clinic

Although everyone claims to have “dry-feeling” eyes on occasion, dry eye is actually a disease. Left untreated it can lead to permanent vision damage. Eyes without proper lubrication are also susceptible to scratches which may lead to infection. At Bower Place Eye Center, we can help diagnose any issues you may be having and come up with a solution for managing those uncomfortable symptoms. Alas, Alberta’s dry climate does not do any favours for people suffering from dry eye syndrome.

How Do I Know if I Have It?

Any breakdown in the tear layer and blinking mechanics of the eye will hamper its natural defenses. Certain medications, a poor diet, caffeine and alcohol consumption can make matters worse. If wearing contact lenses has become unbearable, you need to get in touch with our clinic right away. Common symptoms associated with dry eye include:

  • Frequent burning
  • Grittiness
  • Redness
  • Itchiness
  • Excess watering
  • The need to rub your eyes

How Do I Know if I Have It?

Once we establish that a condition exists, we can take measures to help reduce the severity of the symptoms. Our doctors can assist you with all of the following:

  • Medicated eye drops
  • Antibiotics
  • Tear enhancing medications
  • Regimen advice including compresses, lid massages, scrubs
  • Blinking exercises
  • Unpreserved lubrication depending on the type of dry eye you have
  • Punctal plugs
